🏇 Bonus Column: A Closer Look at Flemington and Its Races
Here are a few stories and facts about the racecourse and races introduced in Ver2.4.
1) The Melbourne Cup: a national tradition
Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, is home to the Melbourne Cup, a race contested over 3200m on turf.
First held in 1861, the Cup now takes place on the first Tuesday in November. Its nickname, “the race that stops a nation,” reflects the attention it attracts across Australia.
2) Flemington’s famous Straight Six
Flemington’s “Straight Six” is a 1200m straight course, and it is the setting for the Champions Sprint.
With no turns between the start and finish, it offers a very different racing spectacle from the 3200m Melbourne Cup.
3) Black Caviar: 25 starts, 25 wins
The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes honors Black Caviar, the champion mare who finished her racing career unbeaten in 25 starts.
In 2013, the Lightning was renamed in her honor. She even won that year’s race herself!
Winning a race bearing her own name was a fitting achievement for such a remarkable horse.
4) A Japanese one-two in 2006
Delta Blues won the 2006 Melbourne Cup, with Pop Rock finishing second. Their result gave Japan a memorable one-two finish at Flemington.
Delta Blues also became the first Japanese-trained horse to win the Melbourne Cup.
Knowing a little of the history adds another layer of fun to racing at Flemington.
Take your favorite horse to the track and try the four new GⅠ races! 🐎
